Catalogue Note

Freud’s prints and their relationship to his painting, are vital to an overall understanding of his aesthetic. The etching of Bella, stem in part from Freud’s preoccupation with what would become his most ambitious painting to that date; Large Interior W11. His mastery of the etching technique is demonstrated in his etching of Bella, through the diverse lines to denote the contrasting textures of hair, skin and fabric. Strong highlights in the face reveal his new ability to use the medium to suggest the play of light across the surface of the skin.
