Condition
The canvas may have never been removed from its original stretcher. It is well stretched. The paint layer is clean and stable. There is no abrasion or weakness to the paint layer. Under ultraviolet light, one can see very small dots of retouch in random areas in the sky, with only one slight concentration in the far left. There is a group of retouches in the mountains on the far left hand side and a few spot of retouch in the mountains in the center. There are no restorations in the buildings in the foreground or in the harbor itself. There are a few retouches around the extreme edges to address some frame abrasion. Some of these retouches, such as those in the mountains, may well be cosmetic and not driven by any real damage. They can most likely be removed in favor of fewer or no retouches at all.
The work looks well and can be hung as is. (This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.)
