possibly old chips to the extremities which have been polished, but overall good condition.

A similar bronze 'scholar's rock' brushrest is in the British Museum, registration number 1986,0412.1.

This is a delightful example of a scholar’s plaything, probably serving a multi-purpose, as a brushrest, paper weight, and spiritual inspiration - as a constant reminder of the power and beauty of nature. It is uncertain how these objects were made, whether accidental castings or deliberate lost wax modellings.
