Catalogue Note

Globes are dated by the maps used in their production.  Therefore, Celestial globes will often have an earlier date than their Terrestrial counterpart; in this case the celestial globe is dated 1799.  Terrestrial maps were updated periodically, for example 1806, 1815 and 1825.  When a globe is labeled "with corrections to....."  that means that one area of the map was overlaid or patched with a corrected version to the newest date; and the panel containing the manufacturers name and date would also be patched.  Often this patch has come off, leaving a knicked area where the date is written.  21" diameter globes, such as these, were last produced in 1825.  After that date 18" became the largest standard globe size.
