Catalogue Note

The present set of chairs derives from a design A. Hepplewhite & Company in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, first published in 1778 (see illustration).  The drapery swag to the center of the splat and the profile of the cresting rail, particularly the canted corners, as well as the profile of the legs and the over-upholstered seats are identical.  The modification of the design is that the arch in the middle of the cresting rail has been moved down into the splat.  The construction and quality of the carving of these chairs indicates that they were executed by very high quality London cabinet-maker.
