Catalogue Note
These fine walnut side chairs, and the previous lot, are related to several chairs and suites of chairs attributed to the Clerkenwell workshop of Giles Grendey. Chief among these are a set of six in the Carnegie Museum of Art which bear Grendey's label and which are illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p.242. fig 434. Several other closely related examples exist, notably a chair at Temple Newsam House, illustrated in C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, 1987, vol. I, p.74, no. 56; another from the collection of Frank Partridge is illustrated by R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, 1954, vol. I, p.257, fig. 95 and a further chair from the collection of the Late Duchess of Wellington is illustrated in P. Macquoid, The Age of Walnut, 1905, p.206, fig. 192. Three similar pairs of chairs attributed to Grendey from Collection of Sir James and Lady Horlick sold at Sotheby’s, London, June 5, 2007, lots 25-27. A similar side chair in the manner of Grendey sold at Sotheby’s, London, Fawley House Sale, October 14-15, 2003, lot 24.
