Catalogue Note

This beautifully carved giltwood mirror epitomizes the fanciful and whimsical style of the English rococo as seen through the eyes of John Linnell one of the most creative and daring of English 18th century carvers and designers.  The overall design relates specifically to a design of the 1750s (see. H. Hayward and P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, New York, 1980, p. 82, fig. 159) which makes use of large leafy trees which entwine the large elongated C-scroll supports of the sides of the mirror.  Linnell appears to use this in many designs for mirrors.  The present mirror relates to a pair of mirrors and console tables after one of Linnells designs, now in the collection of the H.M de Younge Memorial Museum, San Francisco (illustrated, ibid, p. 106, fig. 204)
