Catalogue Note

The present armchairs are identical to a model which Gillows designed in 1787 described as the 'Feather and drapery' style, also referred to as the 'Prince's pattern' after the Prince of Wales's crest: three Ostrich plumes issuing from a crown.  For a discussion of this model, see Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol. I, pp. 160-163.
