Catalogue Note

The present library table is similar to two designs by Gillows.  One design, dated 1792, was supplied to Sir John Ramsden of Byram Hall, Yorkshire.  It too was made of mahogany and had a black leather top crossbanded in kingwood.  The design differs in that it has turreted corners.  Another drawing found in Gillows Coloured Sketch Book is of two pedestals of drawers linked by a middle shelf and a top fitted with a book rest on ratchet support. (illustrated S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol. II, p. 31, plate 566.  This design has very similar feet and overall profile.
