Catalogue Note

For Sir Sidney Colvin see note alongside lot 267,

Although The Rescue was begun by Conrad as early as 1896, a first draft of it was not produced until 23 May 1919, leading the author's bibliographer to described the novel as his 'albatross'. The first American edition was published on 21 May 1920. Shortly afterwards Dent produced an advance copy for private distribution in Britain (Cagle calls this the first English edition, first unpublished printing, A49b(1)); the present second (first published) printing appeared on 24 June 1920.
