Catalogue Note

Henry Major Tomlinson (1873-1958) started life in London's docklands before finding work as a journalist. His first book, The Sea and the Jungle (1912), described a trip of 2000 miles up the Amazon, and at around this time he also contributed to the English Review under the editorship of Ford Madox Hueffer. He went on to write novels, travel books, and memoirs, in a prose style that owed a debt to Conrad.
