Conrad played an important role in furthering Douglas's career as a writer, reading his early efforts and providing him with such advice as the following: "A novel is the shortest way to a living. Before all, imitate no one!!" (Collected Letters, IV, 51). The two men's friendship came to an end, however, when Douglas fled England in 1917 following a charge of indecent assault on a sixteen-year-old boy.
