Catalogue Note

Richard Garnett (1866-1932) was the elder brother of Conrad's close friend Edward Garnett (see lot 200). He was a senior partner in the law firm Darley, Cumberland, which handled some of Conrad's affairs. His wife, Martha Jane Garnett, was the author of The Infamous John Friend (1909), a Napoleonic romance.
