Description

  • Conrad, Joseph
  • Autograph letter signed, to Edward Arnold
  • ink on paper
thanking the publisher for his interest but admitting he has nothing ready for publication ("...Unfortunately I am one of those authors who write at a desk whose drawers are empty and by the side of a waste paper basket which foams full, overbrim, with torn up pages ... Every child of the Earth has the right to be afraid of something - and I own to a dread of twaddle, morbid (perhaps) but less unhealthy than the self confidence which welcomes every plausible thought, every facile expression..."), 4 pages, 8vo, Villa Di Maria, Capri, Italy, 15 March 1905, slight smudging on final page

Edward Arnold (1857-1942) started his publishing firm in 1890, and his literary list included M.R. James and Hilaire Belloc. He employed C.L. Graves as a reader, whom Conrad mentions in this letter as an early supporter of his work.
