Catalogue Note

Richard Garnett (1835–1906), the librarian and author, entered the British Museum as an assistant librarian in 1851. He became superintendent of the Reading Room in 1875 and in 1890 was appointed Keeper of Printed Books. He was the father of Edward Garnett (see note alongside lot 200).
