Part of the manuscript sold to Quinn ("...135 pp of The End of the Tether ... all that remains of the original MS of which was burnt before publication in a lamp accident..."), 16 March 1913 (Collected Letters, V, p.193); his sale, Anderson Galleries, New York, 12-14 November 1923, lot 1804, $1600, to Rosenbach; George T. Keating, lent to Yale, 1938; this leaf probably among a group of leaves separated from the manuscript and returned to Keating in late 1971 (the bulk of the manuscript remains at Yale's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, with the missing leaves supplied in photocopy)
Catalogue Note
'The End of the Tether' was the final story in Youth. A tale of a near-blind sea captain, it has usually been seen as a tale of old age to complement 'Youth'.
