8vo, first edition of the author's first book, presentation copy inscribed by the author to his "oldest English friends", Mr and Mrs G.F.W. Hope ("To | Mr and Mrs. Hope | with affectionate friendship | from the Author | April 1895") on front free endpaper, title-page in red and black, original dark green vertically ribbed cloth lettered in gilt on spine, top edge gilt, later green cloth chemise and slipcase, some light browning, lower hinge splitting, adhesive residue on front fixed endpaper, extremities rubbed, very slightly skewed

The author's first book, inscribed by Conrad in the month of publication to his lifelong friends. For a note on George Fountaine Weare Hope and his wife see lot 205. Cagle records that Almayer's Folly was published "on or about 29 April 1895".
