Description

  • Alfred Stieglitz
  • THE STEERAGE
  • Photogravure
  • 7 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches
small-format photogravure on tissue, from Camera Work 36, framed, 1907, printed in 1911

Literature

Sarah Greenough, Alfred Stieglitz, The Key Set: The Alfred Stieglitz Collection of Photographs, Volume One (Washington, D. C.: The National Gallery of Art, 2002), cat. 312 (another print)

Condition

This photogravure is in generally very good condition. Upon very close examination, 2 tiny nicks are visible near the right edge of the image; these appear to break the tissue but are not immediately apparent. There are 2 small tears in the upper and lower left margin corners, likely where this photogravure was originally affixed to a leaf in Camera Work. There is some light rust-colored discoloration along the lower margin edge.
