Catalogue Note
At the time of the 1978 exhibition (see Exhibited), this drawing was laid down on a 2 ply-card, on the bottom layer of which was found an earlier unfinished Cotman drawing in pencil and watercolor. The paper was watermarked 1798 and was inscribed on the back, referring to the present watercolor, "No. 53 River scene & Group of Trees. J.S. Cotman. Dawson Turner's Folio."
