Catalogue Note

This service was sent as a diplomatic gift to the politically influential Cardinal Antonelli, as discussed by Emil Heuser in Porzellan aus Straßbourg und Frankenthal im 18. Jahrhundert, pp. 201-204. Described in the factory reports as 'Sämtliche Stücke mit Geflügel bemalt, mit einer Bordüre blau und Gold eingefaßt' [All these pieces painted with birds, surrounded with a blue and gilt border], this comprehensive service comprised 24 place settings, figures and groups. A compote and a creamer from this service is illustrated ibid, p. 204, fig. nos. 211 and 212.
