Condition

Watercolor and black chalk on watermarked laid paper. Edges of sheet are deckled. Surface in generally good condition, pigments are faded slightly. Light stain. Mat stain around extreme edges. Paper is slightly buckled. A half inch tear at lower center edge, repaired with tape. Areas of foxing visible, particularly around extreme edges. Verso: Surface dirt and some foxing. Bears watermark "Bergish Gladbach," a German town approximately 10 km East of Cologne.

Catalogue Note

The present lot depicts the cliff-lined coast beneath Heckel's summer house, near Flensburg Firth on the border of Germany and Denmark. It was in this location that Heckel painted his wife Siddi in multiple posings.
