Catalogue Note

Blanche Hoschedé-Monet was trained and encouraged by her stepfather Claude Monet (1840 – 1926)  from an early age, and became his assistant and pupil. She often carried Monet’s easel, canvases and wheelbarrow, setting up to paint en plein air beside him. As Claire Joy notes, their easels were “never very far apart.” (Claire Joys, Claude Monet, Lift at Giverny, Paris, 1985, p. 42). The strong influence of Monet can be felt in the warmth of the summer light set against the cool shade of the weeping willow tree.
