Condition

Oil on canvas, not lined. Artist's pinholes along edge. Surface in generally good condition, aside from thin, fine web of craqueleur across the picture plane. Minor dent and some abrasions upper left corner. Minor stretcher bar marks. Very small stable loss. Areas at top where ground lacks paint, including a few creases upper left with attendant pinholes. One two inch abrasion in lower left quadrant, visible in the sea. Under UV light; no apparent inpainting visible.

Catalogue Note

Anthéor lies on the coast of France along the Mediterranean Sea, slightly south of Cannes. The porphyry rocks lining the coast provided a colorful backdrop for Valtat to explore the confrontation of the jagged slope with the sea.
