Catalogue Note
Born in New York in 1893, Florence Henri lived in Paris, Munich and Vienna before settling in Rome with her husband, the Italian poet Gino Gori, who was closely acquainted with the Italian Furtrists. Henri became focused on painting during a visit to Berlin, where she encountered the art critic Carl Einstein and his theories of contrasting colors and synthesis, which she incorporated into her growing body of work. Enrolling in the Academy of Art in Berlin, Henri studied with Hans Hoffmann, adopting his concern with pictorial structure, spatial illusion and color relationships. The present lot is in line with the preoccupation of her peers at the time, including László Moholy-Nagy, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky.
