Catalogue Note
The present lot was given by Fernand Léger to the late architect Ernest Weissmann. Residing in New York City during World War II, the artist and architect crossed paths during a series of conventions held by the Congrès International d'architecutre moderne (CIAM). This drawing relates directly to two paintings painted by Léger in 1941 (see Georges Bauquier, Catalogue raisonné de l’œuvre peint 1938-1943, vol. VI, Paris, 1998, nos. 1075 and 1076, illustrated pp. 150, 151).
Included with this lot is an affidavit signed by Ernest Weissmann on May 1, 1984, which states: This is an authentic drawing by Fernand Leger, who gave it to me at the time we worked on several murals in private homes of New York's affluent society. The method we used was for me to take a photograph (in color) of a tiny sketch by F.L. and projecting the slide on the wall where the mural was to be painted. After settling on the location, position, size etc., F.L. painted on the basis of key reference points set with the help of the projection. It was very interesting, creative work and a good use of “new technology” (slide/color) in painting.
