Catalogue Note
Born Iya Grigorievna de Gay in St. Petersburg, Iya, Lady Abdy (1897-1993) was the first wife of the English ship-owner Sir Robert Abdy (1896-1976). An extraordinary beauty over six feet tall, Lady Abdy attracted the attention of photographers such as Man Ray, Cecil Beaton and George Hoyningen Huene. In Paris society she frequented the salon of the Comtesse de Noailles, and became acquainted with social luminaries such as Coco Chanel, Jean Cocteau, and Louis Cartier. She subsequently became the patroness of the artists Balthus and André Derain.
