Catalogue Note
This is a view of the road leading to the Algerian suburb of Bouzaréah from Montplaisant, where Marquet and his wife Marcelle acquired a villa, Djenan Sidi Saïd, in 1941. The ravines surrounding the area, described in one guidebook as un mélange de rochers et de verdures, de sécheresse et d'eau fraïche, were a frequent motif in paintings by Marquet from the early 1940s.
