Catalogue Note
Arnold Lakhovsky studied at the Art Academy of Odessa before emigrating to Paris in 1925, where he joined a number of artists seeking greater freedom, including Marc Chagall, Alexandra Exter and Chaim Soutine. After much success in France, he moved to New York City in 1933 and, along with Alexander Iacovleff, taught at Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts.
The present lot is one of the most significant paintings by Lakhovsky to ever come to auction, and an unusual subject for the artist. King Carol II (1893-1953) ruled Romania from 1930 until 1940, when he was forced to surrender parts of the country and abdicate the throne to his son, Prince Michael (b. 1921). Though the pair’s relationship was strained due to a variety of personal and political reasons, the scene shows them during a joyous time, on vacation in St. Johann in Tirol, Austria.
