Condition

The work is displayed on a wooden easel which is believed to be original to the original presentation. The piece itself has not been inspected out of the frame but appears to be in very good condition. There is no damage visible to the cigar box or wood element. This work is in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

George Staempfli, the first owner of the present was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1910 and moved to the United States in 1935, where he joined the gallery M. Knoedler & Co. in New York. Staempfli became a curator of paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston from 1954 to 1956 before establishing his own gallery in 1959. The Staempfli Gallery showed the work of a variety of European and American artists, including Man Ray, Salvador Dalí, Paul Delvaux, David Park, Elmer Bischoff, Joan Brown and George Rickey.
