Catalogue Note
Central to the composition of Le Peintre en rouge is the artist himself, prominently featured wearing bright red clothing. Further dreamlike figures and symbols seem to be fading in and out of the deep blue sky, serving variously as signifiers for his rural home in Vitebsk as well as his adopted home in France. The bride can be read as a reference to Chagall's late wife Bella, whom he loved for thirty-five years.
