Catalogue Note

The present oil depicts the wife and daughter of Raoul Dufy’s friend and fellow painter Alexis Axilette. Frouzette et sa mere was painted in 1906 during Dufy’s trip to Durtal in the Maine-et-Loire region of France, where he stayed with the Axilette family in their home. Dufy created another variation of this image, smaller in scale, which includes the artist Axilette  painting his wife and daughter from the foreground, yet the present work exhibits crisper detail, notably in the figures, and a finer brushwork not seen in the other painting.
