Catalogue Note

Le Sidaner’s works are imbued with a sense of serenity. His subtle use of colors brings vitality to his hushed, everyday scenes, which are otherwise devoid of human presence. Through his art Le Sidaner gains access to an enchanted, deeply private world, to which he grants his viewers a glance through a keyhole; the intimacy and the mystery remain undisturbed.

The present oil depicts a crisp morning in Guincamp in Northwest France, a town where the artist resided for some time. The reflection of the sun on the river gently awakens this cold wintry scene; one can feel the delicate warmth emanating from its surface. Life slowly returns as the sun rises, and the artist intuitively captures the atmosphere of this brief, suspended moment. As Albert Croquez observes, "Mr. Le Sidaner is a painter of intimacy at its most discreet, most noble in familiar settings, and most worthy of an artist and poet" (quoted in Yann Farinaux-Le Sidaner, op. cit., p. 33).
