Catalogue Note

This work was executed in the summer of 1893 when Berthe Morisot and her daughter Julie were visiting the poet Stéphane Mallarmé at his home in Valvins near the forest of Fontainebleau. Julie Manet recounts this trip in her diary:

'Thursday 24th August 1893: We arrived at Fontainebleau at 4:30pm … We took a car, went to Valvins […] and went to see Mr Mallarmé

Sunday 27th August: In the morning we went to Fontainebleau, to the grounds, following a very pretty, long, straight stream, bordered by poplars.' (Le Journal de Julie Manet, Paris, 1979, pp. 9-17, translated from the French).
