Condition

The canvas is not lined, and the surface retains a rich and textured impasto. There are some areas of stable craquelure throughout the red pigments at the bottom of the canvas and in a few other isolated areas. In addition, there are several areas of active craquelure throughout the composition which have recently been consolidated, associated losses restored, and the work has been revarnished. Under ultraviolet light, the aforementioned areas of restoration are visible, including three areas in the background of the upper half of the work, an area to the left of the oil lamp, several areas in the black pigments on the lobster and on the table top just below this, and in several places in the foreground in the lower register. Overall, this work is in stable condition.
