Catalogue Note

Jacob Meyer de Haan (1852-1895), the Dutch founder of a prosperous biscuit manufacturing firm, took up painting late in life. Having sought the advice of Camille Pissarro, he studied under Gauguin, whom he first met in 1889, the year before the artist left for his first trip to Tahiti. Meyer de Haan had a considerable intellectual impact upon Gauguin, and was the creative inspiration for many works, including an oil portrait from 1889 (Wildenstein, no. 317).
