Catalogue Note

In 1963 the reference 6239 was launched replacing the ‘pre Daytona’ reference 6238. Rolex offered special dials, known by collectors as 'exotic' dials, years later; these watches became known as 'Paul Newman' models. The actor is presumed to have worn one in the 1969 film 'Winning'. The present example is one of the later versions featuring the calibre 722-1 and case back stamped with reference 6242.

For similar examples of the reference 6239, refer to Carlo Pergola, Stefano Mazzariol, Giovanni Dosso, Rolex Daytona - A legend is born,  pp. 44 - 61. Also different versions of reference 6239 are described and illustrated in Pucci Papaleo, I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 296-303.
