Catalogue Note

Fourteen of these highly stylized portraits of Ballets Russes personalities, including Diaghilev, Nijinsky, Karsavina and Massine, were printed in Paris in 1916 in a limited edition of 35. They are based on the portrait drawings, watercolours, gouaches and finished oils that Goncharova had executed during the course of the previous six months, whilst accompanying Sergei Diaghilev’s dance troupe to Spain for their Ballet Russes season.

Few complete series of these portraits are known to exist, one of which is in the collection of the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
