Catalogue Note

This view of Tverskaya, or Gorky Street as it was known during the Soviet era, is one of a series of gouache and watercolour works executed by Gerasimov in the September of 1947 to commemorate the celebrations marking the 800th Anniversary of Moscow. Gerasimov, the first appointed President of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, used this series to capture and celebrate the vibrant landscape of the city. The iconic Nikolskaya and Arsenalnaya Towers of the Kremlin Arsenal, can be seen in the distance; the red exterior of the imposing City Administration Building is visible in the right of the composition.
