Catalogue Note

Konchalovsky’s portrait of Henrietta Mironovna Pascar (1888-1974) was painted shortly before she emigrated to London in 1924. An actress and dancer, Pascar had studied at the Sorbonne in her youth and later in Meyerhold’s studio, before becoming the director of the first State Children’s Theatre in Moscow in 1919, where she put on performances of Western classics including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Jungle Book and fairy stories by Hans Christian Andersen. She married the businessman Semen Isaevich Lieberman in Kiev and in 1912 the couple had a son, Alexander.

She took a house in Kensington and worked as an actress for a while in London before moving to Paris, where she opened a cabaret theatre and performed under her stage name, ‘Pascar’. Her publications include Mon Theatre a Moscou (Paris, 1930) and The Errant Heart (New York, 1950).
