Condition

The below condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting is in beautiful condition. It probably has not been recently restored, but it looks very attractive nonetheless. It is possibly slightly dirty. There is one tiny spot of retouching in the background to the left of the arm of the chair on the left side, but no other retouches. The panel is flat, and the paint layer is stable. The two reinforcements on the reverse at the top and bottom of the panel are original.

Catalogue Note

The present lot bears a resemblance to Zwi Perez Chajes (1876-1927), rabbi, scholar and ardent Zionist. Dr. Chajes served as rabbi of the Trieste congregation before settling in Vienna in 1918, where he went on to become Chief Rabbi. An admirer of Kaufmann's works, Dr. Chajes wrote a warm and poetic forward to the 1925 portfolio of the artist's phototypes in which he praised the artist for his mastery and insight.

Kaufmann often used the same objects over and over again in his paintings. This same chair was used in Portrait of Isidor Gewitsch (circa 1900, The Jewish Museum, New York), to whom the sitter of the current work also bears a resemblance.
