Description

  • gold, platinum, jade, diamond, enamel
The opposing chimeras composed of carved pâte-de-verre segments, accented by round, rose and single-cut diamonds weighing approximately .55 carat, highlighted with blue enamel in scale-like motifs, internal circumference 6¾ inches, numbered 75054, with French assay and partial maker's marks; circa 1925.

Condition

In good condition. Some minor enamel loss to the underside of the bangle and to some of the rectangular accents, and some minor chips to the pâte-de-verre, not readily apparent when worn. The diamonds are approximately J-K color, predominantly SI clarity. The bracelet is hinged in the middle and opens slightly for ease of wear. The chimera motif, finding its origins in Antiquity, achieved great popularity during the Art Deco period. Chimera bangles executed in the 1920s and 30s were typically carved from hardstones such as lapis lazuli, coral, jade and rock crystal. In certain cases, pâte-de-verre, a form of glass developed in Ancient Rome and rediscovered by jewelers in the 18th century, was employed when the material's softness and color variations lent themselves to the aesthetic aims of the jeweler. Bangles of very similar design were fashioned by Cartier and Lacloche. On the same page on which lot 429 (or seemingly identical bangle) is illustrated, is another very similar chimera bangle by Lacloche. Another bracelet of very similar design was offered as lot 217 at Christie's London (December 12, 1990, lot 217); this example is signed Lacloche and numbered 75384. The present bangle is numbered 75054, but no signature can be found and the workshop mark has not been identified.
