Catalogue Note

Jean-Guillaume Lanz was the chief modeller at the Strasbourg factory of Paul-Antoine Hannong, where the fruitful partnership between the two produced a variety of figures and groups both in tin-glazed earthenware and porcelain between 1750 and 1754, and then afterwards in porcelain at the Frankenthal factory from 1755 to 1759.  Models attributed to Lanz, including a group of Diana and two dogs, are listed by Aileen Dawson, French Porcelain, A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection, p. 272. An example of this group, which exhibits characteristics in its modelling similar to those of the present example, is illustrated by Hans Haug, La Faiencerie de Strasbourg, fig. 55. Other figures and groups by Lanz also exhibiting similar distinguishing details in the modelling of the naturalistic bases and the figures are illustrated by Jeannine Terasson, Les Hannong et Leur Manufactures Strasbourg Frankenthal, p. 71, and Hans Haug, Les Faiences et Porcelaines de Strasbourg, pls. XXII-XXV. A group of the same model as the present example is illustrated in L'Oeuvre des Hannong: Faïences de Strasbourg et Haguenau, a catalogue for an exhibition by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at Palais Rohan, Strasbourg, January-March, 1975, p. 101, no. 159.
