An identical tapestry is in the collection of the Kulturhistorisches Museum in Magdeburg, inv. no. Te 136(R) (Sabine Schwarz, Gewebte Kunst aus Flandern. Vier historische Tapisserien aus der Textilsammlung des Kulturhistorischen Museums Magdeburg (Magdeburger Museumshefte 8), Magdeburg, 1988, 48-54).

Examples of four of the six recorded episodes from this series are known to have survived: the present subject, the Triumphal Procession, the Banquet, and the Sacrifice By Perseus. This design and others from the Perseus and Andromeda series woven in Antwerp were probably made after designs by Pieter Ykens (1648-1695), who also drew figures for a series of the History of Ulysses and Circe. The border on the present lot, with trophies, scrolling, fruiting, and flowering foliage on a brown ground, is typical of late Antwerp tapestry production.

Many similar designs of this period featured mythological stories within lush and expansive landscapes, sublimating the narrative in favor of developing a rich setting.
