Catalogue Note

These giltwood architectural elements may have been part of the carved and gilded ornaments designed and produced by Thomas Chippendale as part of the overall decorative scheme for Harewood House, circa 1767-78.  Many of these pieces were dismantled during Charles Barry's alterations to the house in the 1840s and were crated and packed away.  (illustrated, C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, New York, 1978, vol. II, pp. 70-76).
