Catalogue Note

Having first worked as an independent artisan in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Bircklé began working for the Garde Meuble Royal in 1785. Throughout his career he made many tables en chiffonière; he delivered one in tulipwood for the Baron de Breteuil at Versailles in 1787 and six for the Dauphin at Meudon in 1799. A stamped commode sold Christie's New York, October 19, 2011, lot 187 and a stamped secrétaire sold Christie's Paris, June 24, 2002, lot 188 both feature similar floral marquetry.
