modelled by Johann Friedrich Lück, as a kneeling Oriental man and woman supporting an artichoke-form potpourri vase on a pierced gilt-edged rococo scroll-molded base, crowned CT mark and numeral 25 in underglaze-blue.

Condition

The cover has a very minor 5/8-in. slice chip to the rim edge, a 1/8-in. chip to the edge and a 1/4-in. flat chip tot he underside of the rim; there is a 1/4-in. chip to the flange. The head of the female figure has been off and glued back into place; there is a minor 1/8-in. chip to the edge of her left sleeve and its tassel is chipped away; a 1/4-in chip to the edge of her apron at the back and two of its tassels are chipped away. A small tassel at the back of the collar of the male figure has been chipped away. The artichoke has numerous touched-up spots of flaking to the green enamel and several further tiny untouched spots of flaking. There is a minor, fine haircrack extending from a firing fault across the base, which runs up from the edge of the base beneath the seated woman and then horizontally towards the end of the base behind her, where there is also a 1/4-in chip to the edge. There is a small chip to the front edge of the base beneath the male figure's yellow boot.

Catalogue Note

A similar example is illustrated by Friedrich H. Hofmann in Frankenthal Porzellan, Volume II, pl. 167, no. 648 and Das Porzellan, p. 263, fig. 263, where the author also illustrates on the previous page a similarly modelled Chinese tomb figure from the 1st-3rd century A.D, which may have been the inspiration for the present model. A similar example, missing its cover, is illustrated in the catalogue of the Jack and Belle Linsky Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, p. 286, no. 228.
