Catalogue Note

The designs comprising the Gobelins manufactory's series of Ovid's Metamorphosis were based on the work of a number of painters, including Louis de Boulogne who exhibited his painting of Rinaldo and Armida in the Salon of 1704. The subject was adapted as a cartoon by Gobelins in the same year. A set of seven tapestries from the series, including one of Rinaldo and Armida, was woven for Louis XV between 1715 and 1720.

Although inspired by an episode from Torquato Tasso's epic poem Gerusalemme liberata, this subject was included in the Metamorphosis series, from which eleven other episodes are recorded, all inspired by Classical mythology.
