Catalogue Note
The eighteenth-century prototype for this model is first mentioned in the 1738 inventory following the death of the duc d'Estrees. There are four known eighteenth century pairs, including the pair sold from Property from the Collections of Lily and Edmond J. Safra, Sotheby's New York, November 3, 2005, lot 130. This model was copied by Edward Holmes Baldock circa 1835 (see Christie's New York, May 24, 2000, lot 291).
Another pair with dragons also facing outward and with an identical handle mount and similarly shaped porcelain vase decorated with a dragon was sold Sotheby's London, June 24, 1974, lot 29.
