Catalogue Note
This very rare model, with its juxtaposition of dark patinated bronze and ormolu, is closely related to the series of 'Au bon sauvage' clocks, which enjoyed great popularity in the late eighteenth century. Many 'au bon sauvage' clocks depict allegorical figures, often representative of a continent, while this one references the myth of the foundation of Rome through the depiction of Romulus and Remus with the She-wolf. A clock of this model from the Teets Collection was sold Sotheby's New York, November 18, 2011, lot 78.
