Provenance

Purchased from Mrs. M. G. Blue of Washington, D.C. for Dumbarton House in 1930.  Mrs. Blue bought it from the Oscar Underwoods when they moved into "Woodlawn" around 1918; Woodlawn was the home of the Custis family (Martha Washington’s descendants) for most of the nineteenth century.

Condition

Scattered age and construction cracks throughout; abrasions and minor chips to mahogany; veneer with some age cracks and a few scattered losses and patches. Buckling to veneer mostly to sides and doors with some associated patches to sides in areas of buckling. Small areas of infill and some fading to mahogany. Carving with some minor chips and losses. Gallery possibly later; some restored breaks to gallery; finial is later. Pediment and gallery with some patched small holes. Brass mounts with minor dents, rubbing, and surface dirt. Escutcheons are probably associated.
